We have been learning about the solar system this term.  We made a rocket with paper and a straw then blew through the straw to see how far our rocket would travel.

Matariki

Our classroom celebrated Matariki, which is the Maori New Year. We came to school in our pyjamas and had a yummy breakfast together! It is great to share time with our whanau.

"I forgot, but I still had breakfast. I ate all the toast because I was hungry. The milo was yum with the marshmallows."

Tread Lightly Caravan visit

The Tread lightly Caravan visit was teaching us that the environment is everything around us in nature and that the environment is really important for us to live (trees for oxygen, water to drink, plants for food etc.) so we need to look after it.

"I am squirting the water to make my seed grow big. Then I can eat it I think."

Planting a garden

We are learning to care for our environment. We will make our school look beautiful.
Our class planted flowers and some vegetables for making a pizza.

Mohammad said, " Look at the roots. It is a big plant."

Diwali Divas

We have been learning about celebrations around the world.  One of the celebrations we explored was Diwali.  We learnt that it is known as the festival of light and one of the parts of this festival is lighting diva (pronounced "diya").  We made our own diva using clay and tea-light candles and then we decorated them with paint and glitter.  Happy Diwali everyone!

"I have got Diwali stuff", said Mohammad.

Bunnings visits Elm Park

This week we were lucky enough to have Bunnings come and visit us and put together a fun day where students got to build a project.  Nga tamariki had an absolute blast hammering, glueing, problem solving and painting to create a masterpiece.  Here is a brief snap-shot of the fun:

"I liked painting my photo frame.  It was tricky using the hammer."

I am learning about shading and reflection

In art we have been learning about shading and reflection.  Students observed an apple and then drew the shapes they could see onto different coloured paper.  Once the shapes were all cut out and stuck together students then looked at the apple again to see where the shiny bits were and where the shadows were.  They used white crayon and charcoal to show this on their apples.

"I like my apples."
